It's far from ideal, but good enough for my goals. As this was a super-cheap top end rebuild, I didn't knock out the valve guides, so I had to work around them during the porting work. We had a theory that the exhaust ports on the heads we had wouldn’t benefit from the permitted plunge cutting, and that they would flow better than one with plunge cuts on the exhaust side.
The third head in the experiment came from a crate motor from Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development. Large velocity stack raised bell mouth entries lead to 10.00” long intake runners with smooth transitions allowing the Ultra Street Intake Manifold to outflow all other production intake manifolds. CNC machined race cylinder heads for 3.0 Essex V6: Each casting is cleaned and crack tested prior to modification. Placement and design of the velocity stacks were rigorously flow tested to ensure maximum delivery of air to the cylinder. Intense planning and design went into the plenum (1.8L plenum volume) to distribute even airflow to all four cylinders under dynamic load conditions.
